Local Governments Selects Officials from Large Cross-Section of Society

Coastal provinces Jiangsu and Guangdong have begun to select government officials from the general public.

Jiangsu Province in east China has selected 21 officials from all sectors of society, including government departments, non-government organizations, state-owned enterprises, universities and research institutes.

All these selected officials are under the age of 45 and have been promoted to positions of deputy directors of bureaux. They had to passed examinations and provide official recommendations for the selection.

The provincial government of Guangdong province has selected 1,136 persons as section chiefs in 46 governmental departments through open competition since the beginning of the year, accounting for 94.3 percent of the total number of section chiefs.

The number of section chiefs who are under 35 has increased from 55 to 131. Nearly 60 percent of section chiefs in the provincial government are university graduates.
