Plan Urged for Moving Water North from South

Titanic efforts are being made by departments concerned in China to move water north from the south, to pipe water from the Yangtze to Shandong, into east Hebei and Tianjin following an emergency plan in 3-5 years, said Vice Minister Zhang Jiyao of the Ministry of Water Resources.

Acting on specific plans mapped, water from the Yangtze is to be pumped from Jiangsu's Jiangdu, and after being lifted by pump stations at four levels, it is to be coursed into the Yellow River to move northward and be finally diverted into Shandong, east Hebei and Tianjin.

Water diversion plans are now being worked out by experts in China to move water north from the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and see to it that it be routed through a eastern, middle and western network. Since great complexities are involved and a long construction period is needed, the whole project will take at least 10 years to complete in China.
