Central Government Calls for Speedier Growth of Towns
China's central authorities have called for speeding up the healthy development of small townships in the country's rural areas.
The Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council have jointly issued a document entitled "Suggestions on Promoting the Healthy Development of Small Townships," outlining the principles for this purpose.
The document noted that now is the time to speed up the urbanization process, and the development of small townships constitutes a major task for the present and future reforms and development in the rural areas.
The development of small townships in rural areas will help solve the deep-rooted problems in the countryside, optimize the rural economy and expand domestic demand.
It is also the way to realize agricultural modernization.
The document stressed that the development of small townships should proceed smoothly, and that they be planned and built in a scientific and co-ordinated way.
In developing small townships, efforts should be made to cultivate the economic base of the townships, the market mechanism should be employed, and more emphasis be given to the efficient use and protection of land, the document said.
