Output of Summer Grain Drops in Hebei

The output of summer grain has dropped by 500 million kilograms this year compared with last year in north China's Hebei province, one of China's major granaries.

Government officials attributed it to the downsizing of wheat fields. Many villagers have used their farmland to produce vegetables and fruits, resulting in a decrease of 490,000 hectares of wheat plowland.

Heavy drought has also affected the production, according to sources. A total of 1.2 million hectares of grain have suffered the drought that is still hovering over the entire north China.

Some 40 million people are mobilized every day to fight against the drought across the country, reports say.

However, the output of high quality wheat is expected to rise, sources claim.
