Summer Grain Output Drops in East China's Major Grain Producer

Summer grain output in Shandong province, one of China's major grain producers, is predicted to drop by one million tons this summer, sources with the provincial agriculture sector said.

The predicted output decrease is mainly attributed to the shrink of sowing acreage resulting from lower wheat prices and continuing drought.

Wheat has been the major summer crop in Shandong. Its total output amounted to 42.69 million tons last year, up 0.1 per cent.

Regardless of these disadvantages, Shandong still had a high per-unit wheat output, with some areas reporting 6,000 kilograms per hectare, according to the sources.
