Shanghai to Employ More Foreign Experts

Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial city, plans to hire more foreign experts to help upgrade its economy in the years to come.

An official with the municipal government said that foreign experts will mostly be working in private businesses, overseas- funded firms as well as state-owned enterprises in high-tech industries.

They are encouraged to become shareholders of local enterprises by offering their patented technologies, the official said.

Shanghai has benefited a great deal from some 60,000 foreign experts employed by the metropolis over the past five years. The Shanghai Organic Fluorine Material Research Institute, for example, has achieved millions of dollars in revenues with the help of foreign technological advisers.

Foreign experts now play an active role in various high-tech industries in the city such as automobiles, and information technology.
