Former Soviet Martyrs Remembered in East China

A memorial ceremony was held recently in this capital of east China's Jiangsu Province to remember the former Soviet airmen who sacrificed their lives while helping China resist Japanese invaders during World War II.

Hundreds of people from all walks of life in Nanjing laid flowers and wreaths at the city's monument to these martyrs.

Hu Xujian, vice-chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the people of the former Soviet Union played a major role in helping China defeat the invading Japanese forces from 1937 to 1945. "The Chinese people will never forget them," said Hu in his address to the ceremony.

The former Soviet Union sent volunteer airmen to China soon after the Chinese war of resistance against Japanese aggression broke out in 1937.

These volunteers participated in some 50 battles in China and more than 200 of them died a heroic death.
