Armed police rescue 500 people trapped in Tibet snowstorm

Over 500 people besieged by heavy snows in the eastern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region have been saved by local armed police, sources said on April 10.

Since April 2, snowstorms have hit a section of the Sichuan-Tibet highway between Basu and Bomi counties, in eastern Tibet, causing frequent avalanches and depositing snow drifts up to two meters deep.

About 200 officers from a road-maintenance armed police regiment rushed to the area to rescue victims. Over 500 of those trapped have been brought to safety over the past week.

The officers are still working to open up the road. No casualties have been reported.
