Cultural Protection in South China Gets State Funding

Chaozhou City of south China's Guangdong Province is getting two million yuan in State support for protecting the city's three ancient alleys and nearby architecture.

The three alleys are situated in the southern part of the old city area of Chaozhou and cover an area of 5.75 hectares. Nearby houses reflecting an architectural style unique to the region were built in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The Chaozhou Survey and Design Institute issued a detailed report on the protection of the three alleys and the nearby architecture in cooperation with the Tongji Urban Planning and Designing Institute of Shanghai.

According to the report, the protection will also extend to 143 ancient wells and 40 ancients trees in the area.

Residents of the three alleys must get permits before they can do repairs or renovations to the buildings.

Buildings inside the protection zone should not be higher than three stories and architecture outside the zone cannot top four stories, according to the report.
