Poor People in Guangxi Have Enough Provisions Now

According to statistics of last year just released by Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangxi had basically solved the problem of food and clothing for the poor people by the end of 1999, one year ahead of the scheduled time set by the "State Program of Lifting Eight Million People out of Poverty in Seven Years".

In 1985 when the State started to launch an all-round work of Aid-for-poor Program, there were as many as 15 million poverty-stricken people in Guangxi's rural areas. But when this program was being carried out in 1994 there still remained eight million, taking up ten per cent of the whole population of the poor people in China's rural areas at that time. The poor people in Guangxi deceased to 1.69 million by the end of last year.

Last year, by pooling in efforts 2032 impoverished villages of Guangxi built 16,000 kilometers of new roads, making it true that every village of Guangxi has a road, electricity, radio broadcasting and TV sets. In addition, the problem of drinking water for both men and domestic animals has largely been solved too. The average income for peasants of that year increased 100 yuan per capita, and the yearly net income has topped 1,900 yuan per capita. Another one million people have adequate food and clothing so far.
