Sci-Tech China Opens Chocolate Website

Hoping to appeal to the ever-growing sweet-toothed segment of society, China has opened its first website devoted to chocolate.

The new site, sponsored by world chocolate giant Mars, will release the latest information on the connection between chocolate and health, list the nutritional content of candy bars and other chocolate confections, and provide the latest research findings on the sweet.

Mars' products such as Dove bars, M&M's, Snickers and others have been enthusiastically received by the Chinese, who believe that a little sugar every day is essential in the daily diet -- but only a little. Statistics show that each Chinese consumes an average of 16.5 grams of sugar per day, 148 grams less than Americans and 40 grams less than the world's average.

However, Chinese's consumption of saccharine is irrationally high. A recent report says that some 60 percent of sugar content of food made in China actually comes from saccharine, which is 300 times sweeter than sugar and widely used in drinks and processed food sold in China. (Xinhua)
