China 30-Plus Injured in Northeast China Earthquake

No one was killed but at least 30 people were injured in an earthquake which jolted northeast China's Liaoning Province January 12.

The Provincial Government of Liaoning has sent more than 500 tents, medical supplies and heaters to the disaster-hit area.

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale hit the area between Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County and Haicheng City in Liaoning Province at 7:43 (Beijing Time) yesterday.

An official from the provincial government said that about 3,600 apartments had collapsed, and another 8,800 households experienced varying degrees of damage.

The heavy snows in the region have worsened the situation and created difficulties for people involved in relief work.

According to the Liaoning Seismological Bureau, the quake's epicenter, located at 40.5 degrees north latitude and 123.1 degrees east longitude, was an aftershock of the quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale on November 29, 1999. However, the Wednesday tremor caused more damage than the November quake, the Bureau said.
