Culture Space-Time Festival to Be Held on First Day of Millennium

China Committee 2000 will hold the "Year 2000 Space-Time Festival" at a park in Beijing's eastern suburbs from January 1 to 3.

The park, dubbed the China Year 2000 Park, includes a building complex in the styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).

"The two-million-sq-km park will be the most bustling place in Beijing on the first day of the new millennium," said one organizer.

Traditional performance and rock-and-roll music will staged during the festival, along with films on human history and scientific development. And at night, there will be a display of fireworks.

The festival is one of a series of celebrations sponsored by the non-governmental China Committee 2000.

Some Chinese scientists have noted that the upcoming 21st century actually begins on January 1, 2001. "But that doesn't affect our celebrations for the year 2000. After all, it's the bridge connecting the 20th and 21st centuries," the organizer said. (Xinhua)
