Culture Ten Best Books of Millennium Selected by HK Readers

Ten best books of the millennium, including four from China have been selected by readers in Hong Kong.

A ceremony, organized by the Provisional Regional Council and the Provisional Urban Council announced the "Ten Good Books of the Millennium" Friday. A total of 103,900 votes were collected by mail, facsimile, via the Internet and voting boxes.

Readers were asked to select the "Ten Best Books of the Millennium" from 50 books shortlisted in terms of readability and their long-term influence on human civilization.

The "Ten Good Books of the Millennium" in chronological order are):

1. Journey to the West, by Wu Cheng'en, published in the 16th century.

2. Strange Tales of Liaozhai, by Pu Songling, published in the early Qing (1644-1911).

3. A Dream of Red Mansions, by Cao Xueqin, published in 1791.

4. Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, by Hans Christian Andersen, published in 1835-73 in Denmark

5. Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, published in 1861, in Britain.

6. Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, published in 1865, in Britain.

7. Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, published in 1887- 1927.

8. Call to Arms, by Lu Xun, published in 1923 in China.

9. The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, published in 1943 in France.

10. The Second World War, by Antoine Churchill, published in 1948 in Britain.
