Sports Shandong Won Championship of Chinese First Division Soccer League

Everything happened in the last minute. Shandong Luneng beat Wuhan Heart K 5-0 in the final round to take the Chinese first division soccer league finally on Sunday.

Shandong collected 48 points to win the league for the first time while Wuhan has been relegated to the second division.

Liaoning Fushun, which had led Shandong by one point, was held to a 1-1 draw by Beijing Guo'an and had to settle for second place.

League top scorer Qu Shengqing put Liaoning one goal up as he beat two defenders and blast home at the 15th minute. Beijing substitute Gao Leilei leveled the score 38 minutes into the second half, dashing the 10-time national champion's deam to become the league winner.

Initiated six years ago, the Chinese first division league saw its dramatic title race had to be finalized until the final round for the first time with Luneng and promoted Liaoning Fushun the biggest contenders.

Luneng, which placed one point adrift of Liaoning after the penultimate round, made the mark with a total of 48 points following a landslide victory over the languishing Wuhan side, which has been relegated to the second division.

Luneng head coach Slobodan Santrac of Yugoslavia also had his name on the history books, as he became the first foreign coach to guide a Chinese soccer club to the league title.

Liaoning Fushun, a team mostly composing of national Under-23 players, was held to a 1-1 away tie by Beijing Guo'an and had to settle for second place on 47 points.

The titles during the last five seasons have gone to Dalian Wanda for four times and Shanghai Shenhua once.

Four-time champions Wanda, a fallen hero who was yet struggling in the relegation zone before the final round, finally escaped from being demoted after the visiting side edged Shenhua 1- 0 for a total of 31 points.

Qingdao Hainiu and Shenyang Haishi were the other two teams which seized the last straw. Hainiu pulled off a home win over Jilin Aodong for 30 total points while visiting Haishi upset Chongqing Longxin 2-1 for a total of 28 points.

Shenzhen Ping'an also collected 28 to escape from being relegated although they lost to 4-0 to Sichuan Quanxin.

Guangzhou Songri bowed to Tianjin Taida 3-2 to lose the final round and the last chance to stay alive as they collected 27 points, only better than Heart K at the bottom. (Xinhua)
