Culture Lights Festival Celebrated in Tibet

Buddhists in Lhasa, the capital city of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region gathered in a main street on December 2 to celebrate the annual Gadain-Ngamqoi Lights Festival.

The annual Lights Festival falls on 25th day of the 10th month of the Tibetan Calendar, which is today, and is to commemorate the death of Tson-kha-pa, founder of the Yellow sect of Buddhism.

Amid vigorous horn-blowing, Buddhists prayed in the square in front of Jonkang Monastery and then walked clockwise around the street.

Unlike the traditional oil lights local people used in previous years, a great variety of lights including solar energy lights, electric bulbs and colorful paper lanterns were used today to decorate buildings in this ancient city.
