China China Reports 130 Million Hectares of Farmland

China on November 3 announced an accurate figure for its farmland, which is 130 million hectares, 35 million hectares more than previously reported.

According to a survey issued by the Ministry of Land and Resources and the National Bureau of Statistics there are 10 million hectares of parks, 227 million hectares of forests and 266 million hectares of grasslands in China.

However, the survey said that the actual amount of farmland didn't increase, because the survey standardized various measurements according to internationally accepted criteria.

60.2 percent of farmland has no irrigation facilities, while in the central and western areas, the percentage is higher. Farmland in east China only accounts for 28.4 percent. The per capita farmland is a little more than 0.1 hectare, less than the world average.

The survey was conducted from 1984 to 1996, involving more than 500,000 professionals.
