World A New Political Turn for the Better in Indonesia

¡¡Commenting on the election of new Indonesian leaders Wahid and Megawati, a commentary in the People's Daily says that the birth of the new Indonesian government and leaders marks the advent of a new era for Indonesia.

¡¡Wahid is the general chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia with around 30 million members and Megawati is chairwoman of the Indonesian Democracy Struggle Party

¡¡It says that a new political turn has appeared following more than two years of political crisis and a new political fixture and order has begun emerging and growing.

¡¡For the Indonesian people having suffered from political turmoil, it says, the political alliance of Wahid and Megawati is a great blessing. Wahid is a moderate muslim leader with a solid political basis. He is rich in political experience, enjoys high reputation and is also good at reconciling all sorts of political forces. What is worth mentioning is that Wahid has all along been firmly opposed to hostility against the Chinese. It notes that the Democracy Struggle Party led by Megawati is the biggest opposition party in Indonesia and the first major political party in Congress. The eldest daughter of former president Sukarno, she will exert a vital clout and is of symbolic significance in the political life in Indonesia. It says that the coalition government of Wahid and Megawati boasts broad and deep-going political foundation. From the perspective of personality and conduct, the two political leaders working in a joint effort in harmony will be able to offer Indonesia a stable future out of political disturbances. The Indonesian people have plagued by political chaos and are aspiring to stability, economic recovery and growth, the healing of wounds and the settlement of the remaining issues. It believes that the political statesmen in power will sure give full consideration to the aspiration of the Indonesian people.

¡¡There are a lot of malaises caused by the former government and the issues left over are grave. Indonesia has suffered much from the financial crisis and political turmoil over the past two years and more, it is difficult for its economic recovery, and political, ethnic and religious conflicts were acute, so it is difficult to alleviate the antagonistic mentality and bring about social reconciliation. People hope that the new Indonesian government led by Wahid and Megawati will bring dialogue and reconciliation to Indonesia with tolerance, superb political savvy and restraint on extremist ideas and acts, it continues.

¡¡The international community has reacted positively to the new Indonesian government, which is in the interest of reform and stability in the country, it concludes. .
