World Commonwealth Team To Visit Pakistan Next Week

A Commonwealth team would visit Pakistan next week to discuss with the new military regime prospects of restoration of democracy in the country within a specified time-frame, a senior Commonwealth official told the press on October 21.

The team, to be led by Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy, would include foreign ministers of Barbados, Ghana and Malaysia, the visiting Secretary General of the Commonwealth Emeka Anyaoku said.

Anyaoku, who held wide-ranging discussions with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh Thursday, said "it is a very good beginning that Pakistan is ready to welcome the ministers."

A Foreign Office spokesman said Anyaoku briefed Vajpayee on the decision of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group this week to suspend Pakistan's membership from the Commonwealth following the military take-over of the country.

Emerging from his 40-minute meeting with Vajpayee, Anyaoku said he had a "very, very good" meeting with the Indian prime minister.

The two sides discussed the developments in Pakistan and the agenda for the Commonwealth Summit scheduled from November 12 in Durban, which Vajpayee was most likely to attend.

The Commonwealth delegation arrived here earlier Thursday.
