Education Internet Festival Kicks Off at Beijing Universities

�� A cultural festival aimed at wiping out Internet illiteracy among university students kicked off In Beijing October 19 at China's prestigious Beijing University.

�� A series of activities including lectures, a digital forum and on-line article soliciting, will be held on the campuses of 12 major Beijing universities.

�� Despite the surging number of Internet users in the country, a staggering 23.8 percent of Beijing University students have never used computer networks, including the Internet, according to a recent survey conducted by the university.

�� The survey also found that those students who do have access to computer networks use them mainly for sending and receiving e-mail.

�� To help students catch up with the information age, Beijing University has allocated special funds to connect student dormitories with fiber optics and give every dormitory Internet access. (Xinhua)
