BEIJING, Sept. 23 -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang on Monday called for closer economic cooperation with Australia, urging both nations to speed up free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations.
During his meeting with Campbell Newman, premier of the Australian state of Queensland, Wang said China and Australia are highly complimentary in the economy.
Wang said China and Australia are witnessing south development in their relations, with smooth cooperation in trade, culture, education, science and technology.
Both nations should work together to speed up FTA negotiations, he said.
China and Australia have conducted 19 rounds of FTA negotiations since 2005. The latest was held from June 4 to 6 in Beijing.
China would like to enhance cooperation with Queensland on agricultural technology and tourism, Wang added.
Newman said China is the most important investment and trade partner of Queensland. He pledged to further economic and trade cooperation with China and contribute to Australia-China relations.
Prior to the meeting, Wang also met with Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington D.C. and author of the New York Times bestseller The Third Industrial Revolution.
