China offers leadership training for 20 senior Fijian officials

SUVA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China has invited 20 senior Fijian officials to take a 14-day course on leadership training and development in the Shanghai-based China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP), Chinese Ambassador Huang Yong announced Tuesday.

On a ceremony held Tuesday at the Public Service Commission's Centre for Training and Development, Huang said China is pleased to extend cooperation and assistance to the Fijian government.

"The Chinese and the Fijian governments have always been working closely with each other in all-round cooperation and will continue to do so," Huang said. "I am very pleased today to see that by mid-September, 20 senior officials of you will leave for China to take the course on leadership training and development in China Executive Leadership Academy of Pudong."

"I have full confidence that the participants of the training will make best use of the opportunity and they will contribute productively to reforms and service delivery in the Fijian public service upon return from this training program in Shanghai, " Huang said. "I do cherish the hope that through the training you may get a vivid picture of what modern China is like, enhance your mutual understandings between Chinese and Fijian public servants, and therefore lay the milestone to promote the long-term and steady development of China-Fiji relations."

Parmesh Chand, permanent secretary for the Public Service Commission, thanked China on behalf of the Fijian government, saying the whole idea of the training is to get senior public officials exposed to "can do attitude" as well as the manner and speed with which public service responds in a rapidly growing economy such as China.

The Public Service Commission will be better equipped to deal with issues pertaining to strategy, public policies implementation, succession planning, projects implementation and service delivery through the training, Chand said.

The 20 officials, including those from the Fijian Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Fiji Police Force, are scheduled to take the course in Shanghai, China from Sept. 16 to Sept. 29.

Officially opened in March, 2005, China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong is a Shanghai-based national institution funded by the central government of China and supervised by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. The training it provides is for senior leaders from governments and top executives from the business community.
