Hospital treatment costs rise faster than inflation

The average price of outpatient treatment in a public hospital at or above county level rose by over five percent during the first seven months of 2013, according to China's health authorities.

Outpatient treatment fees for top-level public hospitals averaged 253.2 yuan (41.3 U.S. dollars) per visit, an increase of 5.9 percent year on year, and 3.4 percent after adjusting for inflation, according to statistics from the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

Meantime, the Consumer Price Index, a key inflation measurement, went up only 2.5 percent in January-August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Outpatient treatment costs averaged 166.4 yuan per visit at second-tier hospitals, an increase of 6.3 percent year on year, or 3.8 percent after adjusting for inflation.

Inpatient costs at top-level public hospitals averaged 11,702 yuan per person in the first seven months of this year.

By the end of July, 961,000 health institutions are serving about 1.3 billion people around the country, including 24,000 hospitals and 922,000 community clinics, according to the commission.

Among hospitals, 13,420 were public and 10,594 were private.

Chinese made a total of 4.04 billion doctor visits in January-July, up 7.7 percent year on year.
