BRUSSELS, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Vice President of the European Parliament (EP) McMillan-Scott's recent accusations against China's human rights are irresponsible, said the spokesperson of the Chinese mission to the European Union (EU) on Friday.

"In his recent article released on-line by a British newspaper, Mr. McMillan-Scott, Vice President of the European Parliament made biased and irresponsible accusations against China's human rights situation," said the spokesperson in a statement.

"I would suggest he read carefully the White Paper on Progress in China's Human Rights issued recently by the Chinese Government, which will help him get a comprehensive and objective picture of the situations in China instead of examining them through outdated and stereotypical spectacles," the spokesperson said.

The statement said that the Chinese government places high priority to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Chinese citizens.

The statement added that in the past three decades of reform and opening-up, the Chinese government has made unremitting efforts to promote economic growth and social development, with tremendous progress in human rights protection.

"I believe the personal view of Mr. McMillan-Scott pales in comparison to the prevailing trend of ever-growing China-EU cooperation in human rights based on equality and mutual respect," said the spokesperson, "China is ready to work with the EU and other parties in the field of human rights to deepen mutual understanding, promote mutual learning and joint progress through dialogue."
