BEIJING, Oct. 24 -- A campaign to check and rectify maritime disaster risks has been launched for China's major inshore projects, according to the State Oceanic Administration (SOA).
In a Thursday statement, the SOA said that the campaign, which will last from this month to June 2014, will target an oil refinery factory in Guangdong province, an oilfield in Liaoning province and a nuclear power station in Fujian province in a trial stage until January next year.
According to the SOA, the check, the first of its kind, will involve multiple industries, high technology requirements, complicated situations and a huge amount of manpower.
China began to review the safety of its inshore projects after a quake-triggered tsunami on March 11, 2011 crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
The SOA statement noted that the trial stage of the check aims to solve inconsistent standards among related industries, set down risk evaluation methods and gather risk prevention experiences so as to lay down a solid foundation for future checks.
