Money is not easy to make: Hong Kong's "wealthiest employees"

Hong Kong is home to some of Asia's richest people, and also to some of Asia's wealthiest employees. Some of the best-paid employees in Hong Kong earn much more than ordinary employees and even many self-made entrepreneurs.

According to a local government report, during the 2011/12 fiscal year 4000 employees were included in the category of those who paid over one million HKD in income tax, representing just over one tenth of one percent of the employed population of Hong Kong; this means their annual incomes surpassed 6.6 million HKD. These high-earning employees are named "Employee Emperors" by Hong Kong people.

Who do the people of Hong Kong see as these "Employee Emperors"? Canning Fok Kin-ning is a good example.

Born in 1951 in Hong Kong, after completing his studies abroad he was employed by Asian's richest man, Li Ka-shing, in 1979. Since joining the top management board of the company in 1997, he has been a top-rate taxpayer and the highest-paid executive for the past few years, and is therefore hailed as the "Emperor of Employees" by Hong Kong residents.

Canning Fok Kin-ning is not a unique case. Some well-known Hong Kong politicians also appear on the list of "Employee Emperors". CY Leung, incumbent Chief Executive of Hong Kong, was given the title early in his career.

"Employee Emperors" are part of the working class; their inspirational stories reflect the spirit of Hong Kong, and are an inspiration to many Hong Kong residents. The people of Hong Kong have a high regard for those who come from a disadvantaged background - they study diligently to escape from poverty, and work hard to achieve their success.
