4 dead, 36 injured in China storehouse blast

At least four people were killed and 36 injured when an explosion ripped through a warehouse in south China's Guangzhou City around noon Tuesday, local police said.

The blast occurred at 11:50 a.m. in a roadside storehouse in the Ezhangtan area of Baiyun district when workers were unloading goods from a container truck.

Residue of explosives were discovered at the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Rescue workers found the remains of four bodies at the scene.

Feng Jinhua, 47, one of janitor at the warehouse, is receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of a hospital in Guangzhou.

Windows of a nearby shopping mall were smashed and billboards at a bus station were damaged in the blast.

Firefighters put out the blaze at about 2:30 p.m..

The warehouse, which covers an area of 14,000 square meters, is mainly used to stores shoes.

"I was collecting garbage with others when I heard a bang. I was shocked and felt dizzy," said a female urban cleaning worker, who is being treated in No.1 People's Hospital in Guangzhou.

Liang Jiawen, a witness, said the ceilings and windows of a nearby building where he worked were damaged. "We thought it was an earthquake and ran outside."
