BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Accidents involving special equipment, such as elevators and boilers, claimed 18 lives and injured five people in China last month, a government official said Thursday.
The death toll was three greater than that of the same period last year, Chen Xitong, spokesman for the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), said at a press conference.
Chen attributed the causes to illegal operation, a lack of safety awareness and unspecified safety management responsibilities.
Chen said AQSIQ has asked local authorities to strengthen checks for special equipment to ensure public safety.
