BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China has approved three varieties of genetically modified (GM) soybeans to be imported as processing materials, the Ministry of Agriculture announced Thursday.
The ministry has issued bio-safety certificates for these three varieties, which include the herbicide-resistant CV127, pest-resistant MON87701 and another variety that can resist both pests and herbicides.
Soybean CV127 has been approved for commercial planting or for use in food in a dozen countries, including the United States, Canada and Japan, according to the ministry.
It said the other two varieties have also been approved for similar purposes in several countries or regions such as the European Union and Mexico.
