NANNING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were injured and dozens of houses destroyed when a tornado swept through parts of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Wednesday morning.

The storm hit the Qixing District of the city of Guilin and Rong'an County in the city of Liuzhou around 5 a.m., local meteorological authorities said.

Six people were injured in Qixing and at least one is in serious condition, the district government said. Twenty-two houses were destroyed in the district.

Two people were reported injured in Rong'an County, with one sent to a local hospital for medical treatment. Five houses were destroyed and nearly 2,000 houses were damaged in the county.

Some 7,250 people have been affected by extreme weather, including heavy rain and wind, in Rong'an. The extreme weather has caused 6.4 million yuan (about 1 million U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses for the county.

Relief work is under way in the affected areas.
