Top schools in China see drop in world rankings

Times Higher Education magazine published its 2013 World Reputation Rankings Tuesday, in which institutions from a total of 20 countries are represented, with Harvard University leading the list again.

The two flagship universities in the Chinese mainland, Tsinghua University (THU) and Peking University (PKU), both slipped slightly compared to last year (THU from 30th to 35th and PKU from 38th to 45th).

"The two institutions, backed by heavy investment, continue to rise in the overall Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which are based on 13 largely objective performance indicators, so perhaps this dip in the reputation-only table reflects the need for those institutions to ensure they are properly communicating their progress to the global scholarly community," said Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings.

The University of Hong Kong rose from 39th in 2012 to 36th, and National Taiwan University leapt to the 51-60 group from the 81-90 team in 2011.

The data used in the rankings were provided by Thomson Reuters, and the 2013 results are based on 16,639 responses from senior published academics through an invitation-only opinion poll.
