China, NATO naval taskforces discuss joint anti-piracy exercise

BEIJING, October 31 (ChinaMil) -- Senior Captain Wang Xiaoyong, commander of the alternate command post of the 15th escort taskforce under the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN), met with Rear Admiral Andrew Tarassov, commander of the NATO Task Force (NTF) 508, on the morning of October 25, 2013, local time, on Ukrainian Navy's frigate "Hetman Sahaydachniy" which was berthing at the Djibouti Port for rest and replenishment. They exchanged views on issues relating to the joint anti-piracy exercise to be held in mid-November.

During the meeting, the two sides briefed each other on their respective escort troops and escort operation modes, jointly analyzed the current anti-piracy situation in the waters of Gulf of Aden, and exchanged their views on issues of the forthcoming joint anti-piracy exercise.

Both sides expressed that escort ships of various countries have carried out more and more exchanges and cooperation since the normalization of escort missions, which has provided a good platform to learn from each other and played a positive role in jointly maintaining international shipping order and safety in the waters of the Gulf of Aden.

It is learnt that the 15th Chinese naval escort taskforce and the NTF 508 are scheduled to hold a joint anti-piracy exercise in mid-November in the waters of the Gulf of Aden.

This is the first joint exercise between Chinese and Ukrainian naval escort ships in the waters of the Gulf of Aden.

The troops to participate in the exercise will include the guided missile frigate "Hengshui" and one Z-9 helicopter of the 15th Chinese naval escort taskforce, and the frigate "Hetman Sahaydachniy" and one Kamov Ka-27 helicopter of the Ukrainian Navy.

The two sides will carry out the exercise on four subjects, namely, taskforce movement, joint search and rescue, boarding and inspection, and helicopters landing on each other's ships.
