Fan Changlong meets with chairman of ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff

Beijing, Jun 6 (ChinaMil) -- Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People's Republic of China, met with Jeong Seung-jo, the visiting chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea (ROK), and his party on the morning of June 5, 2013 in Beijing.

Fan Changlong said that China and the ROK have achieved fruitful results from the bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 20-odd years ago. The relations between the Chinese and the ROK militaries have also undergone steady development, as evidenced by increasingly diverse forms of contacts and constantly expanded areas of cooperation. Fan Changlong hoped that the two militaries will further strengthen communication and coordination, enhance mutual understanding and mutual trust, and deepen exchanges and cooperation, so as to make positive contributions to maintaining regional peace and stability.

Fan Changlong also expressed that the changes of situation of the Korean Peninsula have a significant impact on regional security, and the parties involved should stick to the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, adhere to safeguarding peace and stability of the peninsula, and persist in tackling issues of the peninsula through dialogues and consultations, so as to ease and improve the situation.

Jeong Seung-jo said that the ROK side is grateful to the Chinese side for its efforts to maintain peace and stability of the peninsula and is satisfied with the development of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries. He hoped that the two militaries will strengthen high-level reciprocal visits, deepen mutual strategic trust and constantly deepen the military-to-military relations, so as to make contributions to sustainable and stable development of the relations between the two countries.

Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), was present at the meeting.
