The World Peace Forum 2013 opened on Thursday at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao addressed the opening ceremony with a call for all nations to unite together in the pursuit of peace and security.

"Peace is the primary need for all the peoples of the world, including the people of China, and the Chinese dream is a dream of peace," said Li.

"In the future, as China grows stronger, it will continue to promote peace, development and win-win cooperation, and maintain a commitment to world peace and to common development. China will never seek hegemony or engage in expansionism," he added.

Li Yuanchao proposed that all countries should work together to promote, uphold, and build a peaceful world order, and create a harmonious and stable regional and international environment.

Although the path towards peace is tortuous and difficult, peace is the common ideal of mankind and the prevailing trend of the times. No country should seek its own security at the expense of the security of other countries, Li added.

The World Peace Forum 2013 is being held on June 27 and June 28 with the theme: "International Security in a Transforming World: Peace, Development and Innovation". The hosts are Tsinghua University and the China Institute of Foreign Affairs.
