Members of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Dongdong (L) and Akbar Mijit (R) read materials with Sidney Shapiro at Shapiro's home in Beijing, capital of China, March 9, 2013. Members of the 12th CPPCC National Committee on Saturday visited the 98-year-old American-born translator Shapiro, a CPPCC member absent from the ongoing session due to poor physical condition. Shapiro was born in New York in 1915. He first came to China in 1947 and was granted Chinese citizenship in 1963. After the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, Shapiro devoted himself to translating Chinese literature. He gained his reputation with his English translation of the Chinese classic "Outlaws of the Marsh". Shapiro also rounded off the English versions of modern Chinese literary works including "The Family" and "The Immense Forest and Snowfield." (Xinhua/Jin Liangkuai)
