Recently, the candidates of "CCTV 2013 Touching the Heart of China" were announced. Le Hengxiu, who was hailed as Bethune-style female doctor of Baokang by African patients, was elected as the candidate of "Touching the Heart of China"
Le Hengxiu was 48 years old this year worked as an associate chief physician in gynecology and obstetrics of Baokang County People's Hospital, Xiangyang City, Hubei Province. In September 2011, Le Hengxiu was selected as the team member of the 8th batch of Chinese medical team aiding the Kingdom of Lesotho. She went to the southern region of Africa and started her foreign aid medical work of 2 years.
People in the Kingdom of Lesotho were very poor and suffered from a lot of diseases. The hospital received a patient suffering from a hysteromyoma. The patient was very poor, so she planned to abandon the treatment. Le Hengxiu paid the operation fee for the patient after she knew this situation. When the patient left the hospital, she pulled Le Hengxiu's hands and was unwilling to release her hands. She said with tears in her eyes again and again, "Thank you, Doctor Le. Thank you, China."
The Kingdom of Lesotho was the high incidence area of AIDS. Women of childbearing age had an AIDS infection rate of more than 50%, while the infection rate of inpatients was even higher. In June 2012, Le Hengxiu carelessly punctured her left hand when completing an operation on an AIDS patient. However, she insisted on continuing the operation. Since AIDS virus had an incubation period, Le Hengxiu had to take disease-resistant drug every day in the following 30 days to avoid the infection. After she took the drug, she would face a series of side effects including inability and diarrhea. Nevertheless, she never stopped her work.
In December 2012, Le Hengxiu was found to be with fibroadenoma in her breasts in a local hospital. Her colleagues persuaded her to go back to China for treatment. Nevertheless, she firmly determined to stay there because she remembered that the appointment of her operations was made to March. In order to control the state of his illness temporarily, she accepted resection of tumor in a local hospital. On the third day of the operation, she completed three operations when her own wound had not healed up yet. Due to long-term work regardless of her body state, her state of illness worsened quickly. By the end of this February, she was made a definite diagnosis, breast cancer.
During her stay abroad offering foreign aid, which lasted more than 1 year, Le Hengxiu completed more than 500 operations and rescued 118 severe patients and 74 newborns of severe asphyxia. Among these, several operations including hysteromyoma removal were those the local hospitals could not perform.
At present, Le Hengxiu has lost her hair because of long-term chemotherapy. She had to suspend her work because of worsening illness. Many people persuaded her to apply for a job transfer. However, she said firmly that she hoped that she could continue her devoted doctor career after she recovered.
On August 15 of this year, at the 50th Anniversary Meeting for National Health Foreign Aid Work and Foreign Aid Medical Team Dispatch, Le Hengxiu was awarded with the title of "Advanced Individual of National Foreign Aid Medical Work".
