With the results of this year's gaokao (national college entrance examinations) just released, many of the city's senior high school students and their parents are preparing for summer vacations and the new college life to come.

Like Wang Haicheng (not his real name), a typical third-year student at Shanghai Shibei High School. He scored more than 450 points (full mark 600 points) in this year's gaokao and expects to be accepted by his chosen university.

But before he hops on a plane for a holiday in the US island of Saipan in the Pacific Ocean, there is one last thing yet to be done to complete his agenda: he and some classmates will treat his high school teachers to a special thank-you dinner (known locally as a teacher appreciation banquet).

"The teachers have been with us over the toughest three years of our lives. They not only took good care of our studies, but also our after-school lives. To show our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to what they've done for us, we'd like to treat our teachers to a nice meal," 18-year-old Wang told the Global Times.

The students are looking for a restaurant serving authentic Shanghai food at reasonable prices. "We've checked some restaurants in town offering teacher appreciation banquets. We have a budget of around 2,000 yuan ($326) and want a table at one of the city's better downtown restaurants," Wang said.
