You may be familiar with the famous site of Dai people in the South of China getting rather wet as they ring in the new year with their Water Splashing Festival. But here, in Xishuangbanna, in China’s southern Yunnan Province, not a drop of water is in sight.
Umbrellas made of oiled paper have been a favorite accessory for girls of the Dai ethnic minority for centuries. The elegant parasols are considered to bring good luck to those carrying them.
