Meanwhile, some troupes took to the streets of Jinghong city, to spread the fun to more people. Here, along with the girls holding umbrellas, there were boys drumming their own musical instruments shaped like elephant’s feet. They paraded through main streets of the city and converged in the city’s main plaza where the more familiar site of water splashing was held.
And to round off the festivities comes the float parade. Adorned with the statue of a gold elephant the first float leads the parade through the town, greeting tourists and locals.
The celebrations of the Dai people’s new year provide the perfect opportunity to experience first-hand the eclectic mix of festivities here. The celebrations take place in mid-April. Don’t forget to pack your raincoat.
