JAKARTA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia was appointed as one of ten United Nations Sustainable Consumption and Production (UNSCP) members in a UN Economic Social Council (UN ECOSOC) meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland on July 19, a statement released by Indonesia's environmental ministry said here on Monday.

The appointment on Indonesia as a member of UNSCP was witnessed by Indonesia's Environment Minister Balthazar Kambuaya, who attended as one of speakers in the meeting.

As a member of UNSCP Board, Indonesia was tasked to actively directing and guiding the implementation of 10YFP SCP (10 year framework programs for sustainable consumption and production) in international level that would be facilitated by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) that acts as the 10YFP SCP secretariat.

Indonesia's environment ministry has assigned technical infrastructure development and capacity building deputy to carry out tasks relevant to duties as a member of UNSCP.

"In the appointment occasion, the UNEP conveyed its appreciation on the launching of Indonesia's 10YFPSCP on June 5 this year," the statement said.

Indonesia is the first country to launch national initiative program on sustainable consumption and production after the Rio+20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro and UN resolutions on environment issuance in July and December last year respectively.

Implementation of sustainable consumption and production drive is expected to change the public's consumption pattern into the efficient and environmental-friendly ones, prevent pollution and damage to the environmental and stimulate the growing of environmental-friendly goods and service production capacity.

Besides the task to direct and guide implementation of 10YFP SCP in international level, Indonesia would lead the ASEAN SCP Forum that includes relevant cooperation in frame of ASEAN+3 with Japan, China and South Korea and would actively take part in multi stakeholders forum of The Asia Pacific Roundtable on SCP.

Indonesia has designed nationwide programs, namely Quick Win, that was highly expected to be able to quickly cope with targets set in the implementation sustainable consumption and production program.

Those programs include Green Building, Green Public Procurement, Green Industry and Green Tourism among others.

Implementation of those programs would be coordinated with public works, industry, tourism and creative economy ministries and state agencies tasked to procure goods and services for government use. Indonesia is currently weighing its contribution to SCP Trust Fund.
