CAIRO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Egyptians have been flocking Sunday to major squares across the country to join anti- and pro-President Mohamed Morsi demonstrations.
The opposition groups, who seek pressing Morsi for an early presidential election, are gathering in Cairo's epic Tahrir Square and streets around the presidential palace, as the Egyptian Federation Trade Unions, Maspero Youth Union, the Actors' Syndicate, and the Judges Club Board are also set to join their rallies.
Meanwhile, supporters of Morsi are assembling near the Rabaa al- Adaweya Square in Cairo's Nasr City. Dozens of tents were set up in preparation for an open-ended sit-in to defend the legitimacy of the Islamist-oriented president.
Before the Sunday protests, the "Rebel" campaign that spearheads the anti-Morsi demonstrations announced that more than 22 million signatures had been collected to withdraw confidence from the president, while the Tagarrud "Impartiality" campaign that backs the president said they got 26 million signatures supporting Morsi.
On Saturday, Morsi stressed during a meeting with some representatives of Islamist parties the necessity of maintaining peace during protests. He also underlined the duty of state institutions to protect the Egyptians and secure public and private properties.
Earlier reports said at least 1979 ambulances would be deployed in Egypt's main squares in anticipation of any clashes between the supporters and opponents of Morsi.
Eight people were killed last week during the "warm-up" rallies ahead of the opposition's long-planned Sunday demonstrations to demand Morsi's stepping down, while over 600 were injured, according to the Health Ministry.
