CAIRO, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and over 230 others injured in clashes between supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in Egypt's Delta city of Mansoura, state-run Ahram online reported Wednesday.
Clashes erupted in the vicinity of the security headquarters in Daqahliya governorate, after supporters of Morsi staged a march calling for backing the legitimacy of the Islamist-oriented president.
The injured have been transferred to nearby hospitals, as four of them are in serious condition, a medical source was quoted by Ahram as saying.
The dead are from the Islamists' side, said an official statement issued by the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party.
The protests came hours before Morsi is to address the nation, as the presidency said Monday the people are in "a bad need for transparency and clear stance" regarding the recent developments.
Also on Wednesday, street skirmishes occurred in the nearby Nile Delta city of Tanta, leaving 80 people injured.
Meanwhile, hundreds flocked to the Tahrir square in downtown Cairo, the center of the massive demonstrations that ousted ex- President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, in preparation for sit-ins. The protesters are mainly from the "Rebel" campaign, which has collected more than 15 million signatures against Morsi.
Thousands of Morsi's supporters, in the meantime, gathered outside Cairo International Conferences Center, where some media channels said the president will deliver his speech.
Massive demonstrations, set to be held on June 30, the first anniversary of Morsi's rule, aim to oust Morsi and call for an early election due to his alleged "poor performance."
