TEHRAN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian lawmaker said the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan has led to growing insecurity in the region, Press TV reported Thursday.

"The pretext of the United States and its allies for their presence in Afghanistan was to establish security in the region, but as we are witnessing today, not only security not established, but (the presence of foreign forces) also led to insecurity in the region," Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran's Majlis (parliament) said here in a meeting with the top UN envoy to Afghanistan, Jan Kubis.

Boroujerdi said the restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan is of grave importance to regional countries, adding that "The establishment of stability and tranquillity in Afghanistan will contribute to lasting security in the region, and Iran is ready for cooperation to help restore security, peace and development in this country."

Praising the Islamic republic for delivering humanitarian aid to Afghanistan as well as hosting Afghan refugees, Kubis, for his part, underlined the need for cooperation among Afghanistan's neighbors to see peace take hold in the country.
