NEW DELHI, May 22 (Xinhua) -- India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday came down heavily on the country's ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government which completed four years in its second consecutive five-year term in power.
BJP's top leaders attacked Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for apparently being just a puppet in the hands of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
"UPA-II has seen more corruption than UPA-I. There have been mind-boggling scams which were not seen by any previous government, " BJP's Leader of Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) Sushma Swaraj told the media in the national capital.
She said "Manmohan Singh is the Prime Minister but neither a leader of the country nor the leader of his own party. Singh's colleagues sit with him in the Cabinet and look towards the UPA chairperson (Sonia Gandhi) for directions. Such split leadership is the biggest failure of UPA."
Echoing the sentiments, BJP's Leader of Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) Arun Jaitley said "UPA has devalued the Prime Minister's post. Singh's Cabinet colleagues look towards the UPA chairperson for policy directions and somewhere else for future leadership."
The UPA's image is tainted by a number of corruption scandals like the Commonwealth Games scam, telecom scam, coalgate and railgate, after it formed the government for the second consecutive five-year term in 2009. The general elections are due next year.
