Fatah, Hamas to renew reconciliation dialogue in Cairo on Tuesday

13:18, May 12, 2013

RAMALLAH, May 11 (Xinhua) -- A senior Palestinian official revealed on Saturday that leaders of Fatah and Hamas, two rival Palestinian groups, will meet in Cairo on Tuesday to resume their reconciliation dialogue.

Azzam el-Ahmed, head of Fatah's delegation to the dialogue, told Xinhua that the meeting will focus on forming the transitional unity government that they have previously agreed upon.

Top officials of Fatah, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, have said the formation of such a government has become a priority for the Palestinians.

In the meantime, Musa Abu Marzooq, a senior Hamas member, said on his Facebook page that his movement is ready to present anything needed for ending the Palestinian internal division.

The rift between the two Palestinian parties started in mid- 2007 when Hamas seized control of the coastal enclave of Gaza by force, leaving Fatah's rule confined to the West Bank.

Despite signing an Egyptian-brokered reconciliation agreement in 2011, the two groups failed to make any substantive moves to implement the accord and their previous talks bore only limited fruit.
