CARACAS, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The Venezuelan government supports Palestine's bid to become a full member of the United Nations, Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said Wednesday.

"We will continue fighting for Palestine to be a full member state in the UN," Jaua was quoted by the state news agency AVN as saying during a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart, Riad Al-Maliki.

It was a legacy inherited from late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to continue the struggle for the cause of the Palestinian people, he said.

Earlier in the day, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry established a committee at its headquarters in Caracas, which it said was aimed at defending the rights of the Palestinian people.

For his part, Al-Maliki highlighted the development of bilateral relations between the two sides, saying Venezuela would be "a door which emanates the light of truth" for Palestine.

"Today we can say that this emancipator light comes from a sincere desire to share freedom, which has been integrated into the countries of the Caribbean region," he said.
