Japan could extend sanctions on DPRK for 2 years

TOKYO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Japan is mulling to extend its own sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) for two years after the DPRK carried out the third nuclear test in February, local media reported Wednesday.

The plan is expected to be finalized in a cabinet meeting in early April, according to Japan's broadcaster NHK. Japan's current sanctions on the DPRK will expire on April 13.

Japan has unilaterally imposed sanctions, including bans on trade and port calls, on the DPRK since 2006 when the latter conducted the first underground nuclear test.

Japan extended the punitive measures for six months or one year in the past.
