MOSCOW, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Moscow condemns the rocket attack on a Syrian campus that claimed about 80 lives, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

"We very strongly condemn the mass murder of civilians in Syria. We believe the uncompromising attitude toward terrorism has been demanded by the international community," the ministry said in a statement.

Describing the attack as "barbaric," Moscow said it happened when normal life began to be restored in most Aleppo districts.

"This is obviously a merciless provocation, terrorists revenge for the losses they have suffered during confrontation with government forces," the statement said.

Moscow urged all influential players to facilitate end of violence in Syria and a political settlement on the base of the Geneva Communique signed last June.

Moscow also called for humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.

Two rockets struck one of Syria's biggest universities in a government-controlled area in Aleppo on Tuesday, killing over 80 and wounding 160, mostly students.

The Syrian government and opposition blamed each other for the deadly attack.
