HOUSTON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Four children were critically injured in a car crash Sunday in the U.S. state of Texas, officials said.

A 22-year-old woman accused of driving drunk allegedly caused the wreck at around in the afternoon that critically injured four children in her car, according to newspaper The Houston Chronicle.

According to police, the woman, Lourdes Lopez, was driving northbound in Katy, Texas, in a jeep with five relatives in the car when she allegedly ran a red light at the intersection. A man driving a pickup truck was eastbound on the feeder road and struck the jeep.

A 9-year-old boy, one of the four children in the jeep, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered the most serious injuries, Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva said.

All four children were taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Lopez and another adult passenger in the jeep were taken by ambulance, both reportedly in critical condition.

Police found Lopez had been intoxicated and charges were pending, according to the report.

The crash remained under investigation.
