Beijing is ranked 18th as one of the world's top 50 best student cities, according to the latest QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Best Student City Index.

The capital city, well-known for its dozens of prestigious higher education institutions, shared its spot with Auckland from New Zealand.

Paris was named "Best City for Students" for the second year running, followed by London and Singapore.

Three other Chinese cities -- namely, Hong Kong (7th), Taipei (28th) and Shanghai (35th) -- also made the top 50.

The list was rolled out based on the QS measurements across five aspects, including the overall performance of a city's universities in the QS World University Rankings, student mix, quality of living, employers' comments on the city's graduates and affordability.

To be eligible for a spot on the list, cities should have a population of more than 250,000 and at least two institutions ranked among the QS World University Rankings.

At present, 98 cities in the world qualify on this basis.
